The Mixing Bowl – Camillus, NY

Restaurant Reviews

So we decided to get some breakfast sandwiches today after sleeping in for a bit and wanted to try something new. And ooooh are we glad we tried something new. The Mixing Bowl is located in the small “plaza” at the corner of Bennett and Milton by the former Pete Kitt’s Automotive. It’s the same location that has also been home to Papa Chubb’s Pizza, Moe’s Pit BBQ and Second Chance Diner over the years. At it’s core, The Mixing Bowl is a bakery that also functions as a café with a small selection of breakfast and lunch offerings. We went in specifically for breakfast sandwiches, so we both opted for a “Build Your Own” breakfast.

Chelsea got a buttermilk biscuit with bacon, cheddar cheese and a hard fried egg, while I got Everything Sourdough with pepper jack cheese, chorizo and, although it isn’t advertised, a lightly fried egg. The biscuit was impeccable and absolutely massive. Buttery and crumbly but still held together while eating, nicely cooked bacon and an extremely perfectly seasoned hard fried egg. My sourdough seemed to be missing the “everything seasoning” but I wasn’t upset about it because it was a REALLY good sourdough bun, the chorizo had just the right amount of spice and flavor and was cooked into a perfectly sized patty to fit the bun and my egg was seasoned just as well with a bit of runniness to the yolk without it being completely liquid. If we had to nitpick, the cheeses could have been melted a touch more, but it didn’t detract from the sandwiches.

We also picked up some lemon bars, a cinnamon roll and a strawberry nutella sticky bun. They haven’t been dove into yet, but once we get into those delicious looking treats, I’ll update here to let you know how they are.

The dining room is small and quaint, but not as packed with tables and chairs as it was when Second Chance originally started there. There’s plenty of room to move with a few booths lining opposite walls and a couple of tables in the center. Staff was very pleasant and attentive and it just seemed very cozy inside. I can only hope they continue to stay in that location if they don’t move on to a bigger, better setup elsewhere the same way Second Chance did instead of facing the loss of their business that seems to come from that spot just as Papa Chubb’s and Moe’s Pit BBQ did. The food was delicious, the menu is just the right size, all of the baked goods at the counter looked fantastic and everyone inside was so nice and polite. 10/10, phenomenal breakfast sandwiches. If their lunch options are even half as good as those sandwiches, they have a recipe for success.
