Right, so I’m still down for the count due to a work-related injury and can’t stand at the stove to cook and have to walk with a cane, so we went out to get lunch at Duskee’s Sports Bar and Grill in Phoenix after seeing them make it to the final round of a “March Madness Foodie Bracket” ran by a local Facebook group. We have been to the owner’s other location, Chubby’s Sports Bar and Grill in Fulton, and we genuinely enjoyed our meal there but wanted to see if the same quality was going to be carried over to Duskee’s.
We got there right at noon as they opened and we’re the first non-employees in the door, so that was weird. But we sat down at a regular table since I can’t do high-tops at the moment and perused the menu for an appetizer. We had decided on our lunches before we even walked in the door and had intended to order the Duskee’s Bloomin’ Bread but we were informed by our waitress/bartender that they no longer offer the Bloomin’ Bread, so that was mildly disappointing. We settled on the salted pretzels with pub mustard and ordered our entrées at the same time. The pretzels were decent, just four simple jumbo pretzel sticks fried and salted with high flake pretzel salt. Instead of pub mustard we were given a cheese sauce but neither of us were even remotely disappointed because cheese sauce is life. Decent pub appetizer but nothing to write home about.
Our entrées, on the other hand. They were a vastly different story. Chelsea ordered the Cajun Steak Alfredo minus the mushrooms with her steak cooked medium. The entrée came with a side salad so she got a house salad with ranch dressing and the salad was monstrous for a “side” salad. Upon seeing her eyes widen at the size of this “side salad” our waitress laughed and said “If you think this is scary, wait until you see the pasta portion.” The salad was well prepared but wasn’t anything special other than the size. Her Cajun Steak Alfredo arrived and Chelsea’s eyes got even bigger in fear, which caused our waitress to laugh even harder with an immediate “Told ya.” We were expecting fettucini or linguini with an alfredo sauce, but instead we were greeted by colossal portion of cavatappi pasta coated with a very simple looking sauce and a beautifully cooked medium steak. The sauce was anything but simple and had tremendous flavor and consistency, not overly spicy with the Cajun seasoning and the cavatappi pasta was a really nice choice because it allowed the sauce to cling to the pasta better than a string pasta would. Roasted red peppers and onions were nicely mixed throughout and not overwhelming, perfect seasoning on the steak which was cooked to a beautiful medium and had a nice tenderness. This was a solid alfredo and genuinely shocking to get such a nice pasta dish at a pub.
I ordered The Duskee Burger cooked medium rare, which has mushrooms, onions, roasted red peppers, American cheese and a fried egg. The burger patty is thick and juicy and I’m pretty sure it’s the exact same burger patty used at Chubby’s in Fulton which is a great thing. The bun was legitimately branded with the Duskee’s goat logo and was toasted nicely. The burger patty was perfectly cooked and seasoned and was topped with nicely melted cheese. The perfect amount of sautéed mushrooms, onions and roasted red peppers under the burger patty and a beautifully fried sunny side up egg draped over the top. This is a really good burger. I am a little more partial to the Chubby’s Burger I ordered at Chubby’s because that hot honey it came with was delicious, but this is a very well made burger as well. Fries were perfectly crispy and salted, bun was delicious. All around a great lunch.
Overall, we left extremely satisfied with our meals and Chelsea even took home half of her pasta as leftovers because there was so much of it. Would we drive out to Phoenix JUST to visit Duskee’s again? Probably not, but purely because Maryanne’s Country Time Café is down the street. But if we find ourselves in the area and have a hankering for a delicious burger, we wouldn’t hesitate to stop. I am interested in coming back on a Wednesday and seeing how their 60¢ wings are, especially because they have a lot of different sauce options. Solid place, same exact quality of meals as we had at Chubby’s, pleasant staff and atmosphere. We will inevitably find ourselves back here at some point.
