Cafe 108 – Auburn, NY

Restaurant Reviews

Disclaimer: I’m almost caught up with posting old reviews, I promise! We tried Cafe 108 on August 25th.

Chelsea and I seem to be on a never-ending quest to either try every breakfast sandwich in CNY or find the best. We can’t quite decide which. So in the pursuit of completing this task we decided to give Cafe 108 in Auburn a shot based purely off of their advertisement of having Skaneateles Patisserie stretch bread as an option for their breakfast sandwiches.

We checked out the full menu online and shot over to Genesee St right by the Auburn Public Theater. Turns out Cafe 108 works in conjunction with the Auburn Public Theater, so that just gives you another reason to try them out. Support local art. Chelsea wanted a hard fried egg, American cheese and bacon on stretch bread while I went for house-made sausage, sharp NY cheddar and over-easy egg on stretch bread. For drinks we got a vanilla chai iced latte and iced cold brew coffee with English Toffee syrup and cream. They also have a sizable selection of pastries and treats that all looked delicious in their own right, but it was still morning and too early for me to risk the sudden-onset diabetes that is inevitable in my future.

For starters, stretch bread. That could easily be the end of the review because it’s incredible. My time working at the Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles instilled a deep love for the Patisserie’s stretch bread in my soul. I could eat it plain and still be happy. If you’ve never had the Patisserie’s stretch bread you need to stop what you are doing and go get it. Best baguette ever, fight me if you think otherwise. I ain’t scurred.

Now, once you take eggs, bacon and American cheese and put it on stretch bread and you’ve got a winning idea for a breakfast sandwich. Chelsea’s bacon was crispy, egg cooked through and cheese lightly melted without being liquid stacked neatly on perfectly buttered and toasted bread. My sandwich had a really nice, hand-made sausage patty, perfectly runny eggs, lightly melted shard cheddar and toasted with herb & jalapeño butter. The sausage was delicious with a great sear and all-around flavor but I’m biased because I’m a big fan of fennel in my sausage. Coffees were made exactly as ordered and were also delicious, but it’s coffee and there isn’t a ton to say about it other than “go-go juice make me wake up and taste good.”

In the end, we may not have found the BEST breakfast sandwich in CNY, but we definitely found a place we will happily go back to for breakfast and also to try their lunch offerings at some point too. The stretch bread makes it worth it regardless what you put on it, but between the delicious food and super friendly staff it’s worth it to go support local art and theater. And yes, I know you can go buy the stretch bread directly from the Patisserie and I have in the past. But that ain’t gonna stop me from getting excited when I see that beautiful baguette on a menu somewhere. Local-supporting-local will always be a win in my book.
