Canal Side Cafe & Bistro – Baldwinsville, NY

Restaurant Reviews

This meal took place on January 14th, 2024

We decided we wanted to go to breakfast and try something new, so we headed out to Canal Side Cafe & Bistro in Baldwinsville. The dining room is very quirky and everyone working seemed to be genuinely having fun despite it being busy. The tables and chairs are all different, as if the dining room was pieced together at a thrift store, but it just adds to the charm. Classic rock music was playing and everyone seemed to be having a good morning, with staff and guests all gently singing along or bobbing with the music.

We saw the daily specials posted outside and Chelsea immediately decided she was getting the Royal Vanilla French Toast special and I was getting a side of corned beef hash. The French toast was THICK, clearly hand-cut bread and had a ton of flavor. It came with graham cracker crumbs and maple syrup and the crumbs added a really nice crunchy texture and different flavor. Chelsea is weird and like her bacon to be so crispy it practically crumbles, so she typically orders it extra EXTRA crispy and this sure was crispy. A tad over crispy, but she DID order it black and that’s exactly what she got. The corned beef hash was delicious and salty and clearly house made and not just a can of Hormel heated up. I got a meatlover’s omelette and added mushrooms and onions but ended up with peppers and onions instead. I’m not mad about it, because I love peppers and onions, so it was still great. It had a lot of filling and the sausage was actually crumbled sausage instead of a chopped up breakfast patty, so that was a really nice surprise. Sourdough toast was basic sourdough, but still delicious.

Overall, the breakfast menu is extremely simple and doesn’t have a ton of stuff on it, but it’s clearly well executed. The dining room is fun and quirky, staff were attentive and clearly having a good time and smiling, and the food was tasty. Despite the absolutely miniscule mistakes of the bacon being a bit too charred and the swap of peppers for mushrooms, we will definitely be adding this to the list of places to come back to.
