Roscoe Diner – Roscoe, NY

Restaurant Reviews

Disclaimer: I’m super behind on posting reviews because work and life. We went to the Roscoe Diner on August 18th.

On her way back from New Jersey after seeing Missy Elliot the night before, Chelsea and her best friend stopped at the Roscoe Diner to grab some breakfast. They loved their meals and Chelsea told me she was going to drag me out there to try one dish in particular whether I liked it or not. So we did our morning ritual of waking up early, getting some coffee and taking the dog out before loading into the car and taking the drive down to Roscoe.

The dish that drove Chelsea to get back there ASAP? Deep fried French toast. Yes, you read that right. French toast. Fried like a cheap French toast stick you got at the middle school cafeteria. I know, I was confused too. I’m a sucker for a crappy, frozen French toast stick as much as any other living and breathing human being, but to hear a diner had the audacity to put it in their menu sparked my interest. And, color me surprised, it works. It’s crunchy, fluffy, sweet and savory all at the same time. Fried to perfection, this really is an adult version of a French toast stick but better. She ordered a side of bacon and corned beef hash to go with this culinary monstrosity that shouldn’t work but somehow does, and the bacon came in a small pile instead of the usual two pieces that typically are associated with a side of bacon. Unfortunately, the corned beef hash was just Hormel canned hash, so it didn’t really stand out much.

I went with the He-Man Breakfast of two pieces of traditional French toast, bacon, Taylor ham, house-made sausage and two eggs over easy. My French toast was, like the corned beef hash nothing spectacular and just standard fare. However, the eggs were cooked perfectly, ham a thinner cut than the usual monstrous steak and the sausage was insane. A massive (no pun intended about the size of this beast) departure from the usual breakfast sausage, this  one actually had fennel and seasoning other than brown sugar. The entire meal was actually a great portion size that left me feeling full but not stuffed.

In the end, the food was a mixture of meh and miraculous but that’s OK. This isn’t a complaint by any means because there wasn’t anything WRONG with my French toast or the corned beef hash, they just paled in comparison to the over-the-top perfection of the deep friend French toast and the sausage. I could not believe it when Chelsea said an oversized French toast stick blew her mind, but I can confirm that she was right. There is zero reason that dish should have worked that well, but I strongly recommend that if you happen to find yourself near the Roscoe area you stop in an give it a shot at least once.
